As a designer specializing in interiors that promote wellness, I've developed a step-by-step approach rooted in emotional awareness and design psychology. Let’s explore how I create spaces that foster renewal and tranquility.


Start with Emotional Awareness HEALING


Before diving into color schemes or furniture choices, it's essential to prioritize emotional awareness. I assess my clients' emotional patterns to understand their energy levels and where they find calm. Every space carries emotional weight that can influence our well-being.


A vital principle I follow is: design for the emotion you desire, not the one you’re currently feeling. For instance, if a client feels anxious in their home, we identify specific elements contributing to that stress and develop a plan that transforms their space into a soothing retreat.


Choose Calming Colors Backed by Psychology


As we progress into the design phase, color becomes a central theme. Instead of following fleeting Pinterest trends, I rely on color psychology. Research shows certain colors can effectively lower stress levels. For example:


  • Blues and greens have been shown to reduce cortisol levels by as much as 15%, calming the nervous system.

  • Warm neutrals help minimize visual clutter and promote an inviting atmosphere.

  • ❌ I advise against using reds, bright yellows, or other striking hues in spaces meant for relaxation, as these can heighten anxiety and disrupt focus.


For high-functioning areas, I strictly avoid pink and purple, which studies suggest can hinder clarity and concentration.


Design with Texture to Ground the Nervous System


Texture is a vital, yet often overlooked, aspect of creating healing interiors. I recommend including materials that evoke a sense of calm. Soft fabrics like velvet and boucle, along with natural elements such as brushed wood, can create a welcoming atmosphere.


One guiding principle I follow is: if it shines, it must have purpose. Glossy finishes without depth can create visual chaos, detracting from the soothing environment we want to cultivate.


Declutter with Intention (Not Perfection)


Decluttering shouldn't just aim for minimalism; it should strive to create visual silence and allow energy to flow freely. For individuals dealing with conditions like ADHD or PTSD, the objective is to maintain order without becoming obsessive.


I implement intentional storage solutions, such as compartmentalized bins, that keep items organized while ensuring the space remains calming. For example, using decorative baskets can hide clutter and serve as part of the decor.


Biophilic Touches—Without the Boho Overkill


Incorporating nature into your design significantly enhances well-being but should be done thoughtfully. Instead of filling a room with numerous plants, I recommend adding a few well-placed items that connect the space to the natural world.


Consider using grounding stones, natural wood accents, or a single sculptural plant that echoes nature's simplicity. Research shows that even brief exposure to natural elements can improve mood by up to 20%, making them a key element in design.


Lighting That Soothes, Not Overstimulates


Lighting sets the mood in any environment. When layering lighting, I incorporate three categories:


  • Ambient lighting offers comfort and safety.

  • Task lighting aids clarity for work or relaxation.

  • Accent lighting adds character and personality to the space.


A tip I always share is to choose soft-edged lamps with diffused bulbs for relaxation areas. Bright, harsh light can increase anxiety, while gentle lighting can enhance the feeling of calm.

An essential part of my design approach is establishing an "Anchor Zone"—a small sanctuary within your home to ground yourself during chaotic times. This space could be a cozy nook for sipping herbal tea, a meditation corner, or even an area for a leisurely hobby.


Think of it as your personal retreat, a space designed to restore your sense of balance amidst life’s challenges.
